“A Deep Dive into Captain America: Winter Soldier
When Marvel Comics brought Captain America back in the sixties, Steve Rogers went from self-assured hero to a man out of time, having spent twenty years encased in ice. He saw a changed America, one that went from a united, patriotic people to one in turmoil, struggling with social change, war and distrust in our government. Cap soon realized that his black and white view of right and wrong was outdated, and he himself struggled with his role fighting for a country that didn’t share his ideals anymore. In both the final scene of Captain America: The First Avenger and throughout The Avengers, this theme is explored in depth, and we see Rogers still trying to apply decades old morals to issues that are usually morally ambiguous.
It would appear that Cap is still struggling with this, as is evidenced in the first official trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which hit the web on Thursday. Rogers, who is donning a new and more muted costume, is still running missions for S.H.I.E.L.D., and seems to be afraid to really get back into the world when fighting evil isn’t involved. The trailer starts out with a scene of Steve Rogers and Black Widow talking on a plane before a mission. Natasha asks if he has any plans for Saturday, and Rogers quips that everyone else in his barbershop quartet is dead, so no. She then tells him that there is a young lady who would say yes were he to ask her out, and he makes the excuse that he’s too busy. And from everything else in the trailer, one might have to agree.
We see Rogers talking with Director Nick Fury in several scenes, both disagreeing about what constitutes freedom and what is nothing more than keeping everyone in line through fear, as Fury informs him that the agency is taking out terrorists before they do evil acts. This doesn’t sit well with the good Captain, who believes that punishment should come after the crime, not before. Rogers is also seen talking with Alexander Goodwin Pierce (portrayed by the always wonderful Robert Redford), a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and comrade of Fury’s. Pierce tells him that embracing the new world means letting go of the old one. Again, Rogers seems to have trouble with a world that isn’t as cut and dried as the one he lived in.”
