“Melissa McCarthy Grabs A Great Comedy With Identity Thief
Leave it to Melissa McCarthy to make identify theft a laughing matter. Pair the famously funny lady with the man who made abusive bosses awesome in “Horrible Bosses” and you have one raucous comedy headed to theaters early next year. Joined by Jason Bateman, Amanda Peet, and a vigilante storyline about a chase through Florida and it sounds like a winning formula for another runaway comedy hit.
The star of TV’s “Mike and Molly” is comedy dynamite, stealing the already outrageous show in last year’s “Bridesmaids” and winning over fans left and right. Her small screen career turned into blockbuster gold last year, and the trend is likely to continue. Melissa McCarthy dons a wig and a killer throat punch in “Identity Thief,” a film about a mild-mannered Colorado man who takes matters into his own hands when his credit limit gets tested by a thief in Florida.
After a fun trip down spending lane with the thief herself, the film promises to become anything but your typical chase after the thief movie, as the victim goes toe-to-toe with the assailant he refers to as a “hobbit.” Director Seth Gordon made taking matters into one’s own hands cool and funny in “Horrible Bosses” and intends to continue the trend with “Identify Thief,” putting favorite Jason Bateman in the seat of hesitant vigilante pushed to the limit. With a penchant for car humor, Gordon moves out of the Toyota Prius and into an electric blue Fiat in his newest quest for civilian justice.
A trailer for the film hit the Internet this week, boasting a wide range of comedic moments matched only by car crashes and several painful punches delivered by Melissa McCarthy herself. Set in the Sunshine state, the comedy is due to deliver almost as much explosions and violence as it does gut-wrenching humor. Written by Craig Mazin — the writer behind both sequels of “The Hangover” — the script is sure to capitalize on McCarthy’s talent for physical humor as well as Jason Bateman’s supposed pre-disposition towards being emotionally and physically harmed in his comedic films.
Anyone who has ever been a victim of identity theft knows it is no laughing matter unless the crook that committed the crime is Melissa McCarthy. Due out in theaters in February of 2013, “Identify Thief” is sure to make mincemeat out of the harrowing experience, allowing victims of the biggest crime in the country a chance to laugh at their woes and vicariously get even with their faceless perpetrators.”
