Superman is an American Icon. His red cape and blue tights are almost universally recognizable, and his legendary strength and ability to soar through the skies have inspired millions. Superman’s comic-book glory has been attempted time and time again on the big screen, with varying success. Christopher Reeve donned the cape in the late 70s and early 80s, Dean Cain took on the heroic persona in the 90s (Lois and Clark), and Brandon Routh attempted to bring life back to the franchise with 2006’s Superman Returns. With the recent success of the Dark Knight trilogy, superhero movies have received a renewed interest by audiences around the world. So, can the trend of superhero success continue with 2013’s Man of Steel? Here’s hoping the answer is yes.
Early information regarding the film and recent trailers for Man of Steel reveal that Superman could be getting the Batman Begins treatment. In other words, it appears that director Zack Snyder (300) is diving into the depths of Superman’s character. Will it be as dark and intense as the recent Batman films? Maybe not, but I am still anxious to see what skeletons are in Clark Kent’s closet. Speaking of, I am also hoping that superman’s alter-ego can find a more suitable disguise than a pair of glasses – the glasses-on, glasses-off model needs to stop. Previews of the film give fans plenty to hope for; the film looks dark, dramatic, and, most importantly, it looks different than any Superman we have seen before.
Man of Steel is set to release June 14th, 2013, giving anxious fans plenty of time to build up anticipation. Director Zach Snyder, famous for his adaptations of graphic novels like 300 and Watchmen, will take the reins as director. If Snyder can find a way to use his highly-stylized techniques in a way that does the man in blue justice, we could be looking at the next blockbuster franchise. The cast of Man of Steel is full of standouts. Henry Cavill (Immortals) will take the role of Superman, while Russell Crowe (Gladiator) will appear as Superman’s father Jor-El. The part of Lois Lane goes to acclaimed actress Amy Adams, who has risen to stardom with such recent films as The Fighter (2010) and The Master (2012)(imdb.com). The star power does not stop there. The cast also includes Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, and Christopher Meloni.
Not much has been revealed about the plot of Man of Steel, but it looks to follow Clark Kent from his early years to his days as Superman. The hero’s origin will no doubt receive extensive treatment, but early synopses also reveal that the villain General Zod will also play an important role. The power-hungry Zod appeared in 1980’s Superman II, but it remains to be seen how Snyder will portray the new character. One thing is certain – audiences will see Superman’s full arsenal of powers from super-strength, to his ability to fly. We will have to wait until summer to see what else is in store.
Man of Steel has not yet received an MPAA rating, but it looks like a PG-13. It is still early for critical reviews of the film, but you can expect them sometime in the summer of 2013. As always, check back here for the latest news, inside reports, trailers, pictures, and videos.
