“A Closer Look At Oz: The Great and Powerful Movie
SAN DIEGO — Hot off its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, the “Oz: The Great and Powerful” trailer has made its way online courtesy of Disney.
The new take on L. Frank Baum’s beloved stories comes at us from director Sam Raimi and stars James Franco as Oz, Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good and Mila Kunis as Theodorah, the Wicked Witch of the West. All three were on hand to talk to MTV News about the movie following the panel, and we’ll have more from that interview over the next few days. But for now, we’re breaking down the “Oz: The Great and Powerful” exciting new trailer:
We’re Not In Kansas Anymore
Raimi’s Oz isn’t the same one we know from Victor Fleming’s classic “Wizard of Oz” film and certainly doesn’t look as kind a setting. From the haunting music to the dangerous creatures, this Oz doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a friendly place for our favorite man behind the curtain.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road
With that being said, we do get one very familiar sight: the yellow brick road. In fact, the scene that shows Theodora and Oz staring off into the distance at the Emerald City is markedly familiar to the shot of Dorothy and her three companions staring the same way in “The Wizard of Oz.” The interesting implication of this scene is that the Emerald City was around before the Wizard was its ruler. If that’s the case, then who was in charge before him? The plot thickens.
A Love Triangle at Play?If we aren’t mistaken, Oz looks like he’s getting a bit close with both Glinda and Theodorah in this clip. Somehow we doubt that Theodorah, who Oz meets first, is going to be pleased about his interest in the Good Witch of the North. Maybe that’s why she sounds so mad when she says, “Aren’t you the great man we’ve been waiting for?”
A War Unfolds
Oz might be a land of mystery and wonder, but there’s also a lot of fighting going on. Flying monkeys descend from a Wicked Witch’s tower, soldiers march to war, and even Glinda looks like she’s getting in on the action. So who’s fighting who here? Somehow we doubt the Good and Wicked Witches get along. But there likely is more of a conflict happening in Oz than we can see in this trailer.”
