Stand Up Guys Starring Al Pacino

It is difficult to watch the careers of aging movie stars. Guys we grew up with like Clint Eastwood, Bill Murray, Robert De Niro, are being force to adapt to new roles as they make way for a new generation of actors. Al Pacino, famous for such roles as Michael Corleone (The Godfather), Serpico, and Scarface, has been an icon for over three decades, and he hopes to step back into the spotlight once again for 2013’s Stand Up Guys.

Al Pacino stars as Val, an aging con artist who, along with a team that includes the legendary actors Christopher Walken (Doc) and Alan Arkin(Hirsch), accepts one final assignment. Each of these actors can carry a film by themselves, so it will certainly be exciting to see how they are able to perform alongside one another. According to early plot indicators, Stand Up Guys will see Val, Doc, and Hirsch uniting for one last con, but a proposal made by a former mob boss could threaten the bonds that have held the trio together for decades. Bullets will fly, jokes will be made, and their will undoubtedly be a twist or two that will keep audiences guessing. The good news is that the movie is less than two weeks away, so we won’t have to wait long to find out the answers to our questions.

Alongside Pacino, Walken, and Arkin, Stand Up Guys will also star the beautiful Julianna Margulies, whose most recent success in CBS’s The Good Wife has renewed her stardom. The cast also includes Mark Margolis (The Wrestler), Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher), and Craig Sheffer (A River Runs Through It). The film, which falls under the genre of action/comedy, will revolve around themes of loyalty, friendship, and revenge.

Stand Up Guys is scheduled for release on February 1 — just a couple of weeks from now. The director of the film, Fisher Stevens, is probably more notable for his acting career than his few directorial credits. He has appeared in movies and television shows, which include Lost, Early Edition, and Damages. Early reviews are currently pouring in, and the film is garnering a perfectly mixed set of scores. Metacritic.com has Stand Up Guys sitting at a below-average 41, but it is hard to judge a movie based on nine total critic reviews. The next two weeks will give potential audiences a chance to gauge critical reception of the film, but low review scores should always be taken with a grain of salt.

Stand Up Guys will be distributed by LionsGate, and has an MPAA rating of ‘R’. Can the team of aging cons rediscover their glory days, or has their time come and gone? What is the secret that threatens a friendship that has lasted decades? How will their last con play out? All of these questions are waiting to be answered, but audiences don’t have long to wait to find the answers.
