That’s My Boy starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg is bound to have a wide premiere in theaters on June 15th 2012. A story about a father and son who drifted apart after years of bad parenthood and upbringing. Adam Sandler plays the character of Donny who had a child in his teens, his son Todd (Adam Samberg) decides to leave Donny as soon as he became 18. Now after years of no communication Donny shows up at Todd’s wedding hoping to rekindle and fix the bad years that went by. As early as now there are movie reviews for this upcoming comedy film. Let’s take a look at Steven Lebowitz’s review on That’s My Boy:
“Adam Sandler On His New Movie: That’s My Boy
Earlier this year, on April 1st, Adam Sandler swept The Razzies Awards , because of his movie, “Jack and Jill”. It’s too soon to tell if he will be going for another sweep with his new movie, “That’s My Boy ”, but he could be a contender to do so.
A young teenager named Donny Berger has an affair with his hot math teacher, Ms. Mary McGarricle (Eva Amurri Martino ) when he is still in middle school. The affair results in Ms. McGarricle going to jail, leaving a young Donny to raise their lovechild, Todd. Donny becomes a fake celebrity of sorts because of the affair, leading him to become one of the worst fathers ever. When Todd (Andy Samberg ) turns 18, he leaves Donny, never wanting anything to do with him again. Years later, an older Donny (Sandler) finds himself in financial trouble and he figures if he can reconnect with his son, it might help him out.
Vanilla Ice , who co-stars as a fictional version of himself in “That’s My Boy” attended an advanced screening earlier this week at the Muvico in CityPlace (check back later this week to see my interview with him). He told audience members before the movie that they will not have to work out because they will soon be bending over and laughing so hard throughout the movie that by the time they leave they will have flat stomachs. He was right in that most of the people in the packed theater were laughing many times throughout the entire movie.
“That’s My Boy” looks to be one of those comedies you think is hysterical or one of the dumbest movies you ever saw. Many of the jokes are VERY raunchy and will appeal to the lowest common denominator in humor. Every time you think they can’t take a joke any further, any sicker or you think they have already done it all, “That’s My Boy” figures out a way to make you wrong because it constantly “goes there”.
Not surprisingly, there is very little to say about the acting that is positive. Adam Sandler embodies one of the characters you often hear on his comedy albums. However, the worst performance in the movie belongs to the New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan . He’s mostly in there to provide some inside jokes, but he delivers all his lines as if he was reading them directly from the script. Vanilla Ice was a delightful standout. While he is playing himself, he looks to be having the most fun on screen. Sandberg just left Saturday Night Live and he better step up his game if he expects to have a successful career after leaving that show.
“That’s My Boy” is not Adam Sandler’s best comedy, but it is certainly not his worst either. His loyal fans are sure to like it. Those who prefer his PG-13 type of humor will probably be better off skipping this one. It is rated R for crude sexual content throughout, nudity, pervasive language and some drug use.”
