These mercenaries then seek the help of Arkin (Josh Stewart) who is the only known survivor who escaped the grips of The Collector. Arkin will have to overcome his fears and go back to the frightening labyrinth to save Elena and himself. So why is The Collection becoming the latest talk among critics and movie fans? Check out the article written by Todd Gilchrist:
“The Collection: A Rare Breed of Horror Indeed
Starring The Collector’s Josh Stewart and newcomer Emma Fitzpatrick, The Collection picks up shortly after the first film. When Elena (Fitzpatrick) meets up for a night on the town with her friend Missy (Johanna Braddy), she’s thinking of nothing but fun and a temporary reprieve from her overprotective father (Christopher McDonald). But when their dance party at a secret location turns out to be the destination for the Collector (Randall Archer) to stage an elaborate mass murder, she finds herself on the run from the serial killer/ torture artist.
Although the Collector captures Elena in the melee, her interference allows Arkin (Stewart) to escape, although his captor sends a message promising to visit the ex-con’s family and friends. But when Elena’s father enlists him to help a team of bodyguards and bounty hunters find and rescue his daughter, Arkin finds himself venturing back into the Collector’s lair for another terrifying round of mental and physical anguish.
Directed by Marcus Dunstan from a script by himself and longtime collaborator Patrick Melton (who wrote Saw IV, V, VI and Piranha 3DD together), The Collection is an intriguing forward move from this series, primarily because it seems aware that it no longer neatly fits into the spectrum of torture-themed horror films that its predecessor did. While there are plenty of gory depictions of pain inflicted, Dunstan shows an admirable level of restraint — albeit seemingly less out of fealty to commercial trends than an increased level of sophistication as a filmmaker and storyteller. Perhaps best described as a suitable product of its time by virtue of the maturity and talent of its filmmakers, The Collection provides a requisite level of viscera without simply making the violence gratuitous.”
