“The Latest Trailer for Thor: The Dark World
This is what happens when you get a guy who previously directed Game of Thrones to help the latest Thor movie: It gets super bleak and moody. But when the flick is called Thor: The Dark World, it’s also exactly what you need. And director Alan Taylor delivers.
And it’s not like darkness is a bad thing.
Thor: The Dark World picks up where The Avengers left the hammer-wielding superhero (played by Chris Hemsworth) and follows him back to Asgard, where a battle is brewing with Malekith the Accursed. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), whom Thor—as promised—has retrieved from Earth, is also back to helpThor save Earth and the Nine Realms. And whereas the first trailer centered on the reunion between Thor and Jane (and Loki’s oh-so-glorious hair), this one goes deeper into the high stakes face-off between Thor and the Dark Elves and ultimately the problem that Jane notes, which is that “the very fabric of reality can be torn apart.” (Also, there’s a quick glimpse of the leader of the Dark Elves himself—Malekith—but blink and you might miss it.) How’s that for dark?
The trailer, thankfully, also seems to indicate there will be plenty of Loki (Tom Hiddleston)—and his hair—in The Dark World. From his rock-star-in-a-hotel trashing of his prison cell to pretty much everyone berating him about not betraying his blonde brother to his admission that even he wouldn’t trust him, he’s got a lot going here. But honestly, now that Hiddleston has confirmed Loki won’t be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there’s no way this movie can have enough of him.
With Thor and The Avengers he became a fan-favorite villain (note for example the rapturous roar Hiddleston-as-Loki received when he took the stage at Comic-Con International last month) and knowingThe Dark World could be the last dose of Loki we get for a while might be the bleakest thing about this trailer. (Sigh. This will leave us truly desperate for more Loki.)
That doesn’t mean the latest trailer for Taylor’s Thor flick is totally without silver linings. Jane decking Loki with the message “that was for New York” was a nice touch, and Thor’s fight-ending “anyone else?” has a certain panache. But elsewhere it looks like the latest Thor flick, out November 8, is spinning a sinister story worthy of Westeros. And frankly, we’re OK with that.”
